Welcome to the Virtual Sculpture Gallery!

Greek and Roman sculpture was painted; the dark-eyed "kore with the red boots" sports brilliant red shoes, and the hair of the "Blond Boy" is still blond, but since at least Winckelmann the West has assumed that this sculpture was white. The Virtual Sculpture Gallery is a teaching and research tool designed to support the study of Greek and Roman antiquity by reproducing fifteen ancient works as they were meant to be seen, in color.

As we painted we tried to use reasonable colors and to respect the integrity of the actual pieces of sculpture, but at times we have had to compromise some accuracy in the interests of what would look convincing on screen. With two exceptions (a damaged nose and a broken neck), we have not attempted to reconstruct the sculpture.

    Extended Introduction to the Gallery

Before you proceed further into the site, be sure to check through these links for more detailed information about this project:

This project was made possible by an Undergraduate Summer Scholarship (USS) through Miami University's Office for the Advancement of Scholarship and Teaching (OAST). From the USS home page:

"The Undergraduate Summer Scholars program is an initiative aimed at heightening the intellectual challenge of the learning environment at Miami University. Now in its fifth year, this program enables Miami undergraduates to do research or other creative activities in the summer under the supervision of faculty."

A grant from CELT (Committee for the Enhancement of Learning and Teaching) supported this project as well.

The core participants of the project were Eric Case, a junior undergraduate at Miami and Judith de Luce, a Miami Professor of Classics. To learn more about Eric and Judith click on the "Contributors" link on the left side of this page. There, you will find links to their home pages as well as their email addresses. To email them directly from this site, click the "Feedback" link on the left side of this page.

How to use this site:

This site was designed on Macintosh computers and therefore looks wonderful when viewed on Macs. If you are reading this from a Windows computer and something looks odd, chances are it's because of Windows. Therefore, this site is best viewed on a Mac with a version 4 web browser with Quicktime 4 installed.

There are several ways to navigate this site. One is to click on the links at the left of each page (in the light-brown box), which take you to the main sub-pages of the site. From there, you are free to explore the site on your own.

The other way to peruse the site is to follow the arrows at the bottom of each page:

The right arrow takes you to the next page in the site. When you're ready to move on, scroll to the bottom of that page and click the right arrow again. If you want to go back a page, either click your web browser's "Back" button or click the left arrow. If you decide to follow the arrows, you will see all of the images and movies in the gallery.

The movies on this site use Apple's Quicktime VR technology. As long as you have the Quicktime plugin installed in your web browser's "Plugins" folder, they should play as they're supposed to. To check if you have the Quicktime plugin installed, follow the instructions on the Quicktime Test page. It would be wise to obtain the latest Quicktime software from Apple, to ensure that the movies on this site work as intended.

If you're positive that you have the Quicktime Plugin installed and are using the latest version of Quicktime from Apple, either browse as you please or click the right arrow to continue your tour of the virtual sculpture gallery.

If you want to visit the sculptures on this site directly (without viewing the other areas of the site first), pick the specific sculpture you want to see from this list:
