  • Prerequisite: completion of GER 201 with a passing grade

  • Course goals: In GER 202 we will work on all four language skills (reading, listening comprehension, writing and speaking). Special focal points of this course will be the expansion of vocabulary and development of excellent writing skills. Discussions and written assignments will be in German. Specific points of German grammar will be reviewed on an as-needed basis.

  • Grading:
    Four quizzes 4 X 100 (-100) = 300
    Aufsätze 4 X 25 = 100
    Journale 7 X 25 = 175
    Homework/Participation = 25
    Final Exam = 200

    Total =

    800

  • About the Aufsätze: The first draft is turned in on the due date; after I have assigned a grade, you should rewrite the paper and turn in a final draft. The grade for the final draft may be higher but not more than one grade (for example, if you have a B- on the first draft, the final grade could not be higher than A-). The grade might also be lower if corrections are insufficient.
  • Please keep all your essays in a folder and turn in the portfolio every time
  • About the Journale: The Journal is an ongoing writing exercise which is intended to give you needed writing practice with somewhat reduced pressure for a grade. It is expected that you will experiment with broadening your writing skills. As with the Aufsatz, you write your own journal, place it in a folder with others and hand in your latest in the appropriate folder on the date specified on the daily syllabus. The Journal is evaluated as done/undone. The usual resource for a topic is “Galileo Podcasts” found online. (Note: see “Galileo” in the menu to the left.)
  • Policies: Do not cut class. Absences are excused only for serious and documented illness and major religious holidays. Please consult with the instructor in these cases. After three unexcused absences you will be dropped from the course.
  • Homework: Miami standards call for two hours of preparation for each hour of class, for an average grade and an average student (6 hrs/week for a 3-credit course).
  • Reminder of Departmental and University policies on written work and plagiarism: Please keep in mind that all written assignments submitted for this class should be your OWN WORK. DO NOT have room mates, friends (at your dorm or abroad), family members, or tutors write or proofread your papers. DO NOT download papers from the internet, for these are the easiest to identify as work not your own. Cases of plagiarism are subject to strict disciplinary measures. After all, great differences in performance noted between in-class performance and work prepared outside of class easily reveal themselves.
