Plural Nouns

... aber die Steine waren so schwer, ...
... but
the stones were so heavy, ...


The word Steine is plural, therefore requiring a plural article. In this example, die Steine is in the nominative case because it is the subject of the sentence.  Note the subject-verb agreement.

German nouns show plural in four different ways:
- no change in the noun or added umlaut: das Märchen> dieMärchen
der Bruder > die Brüder
- added -e or -e plus umlaut: der Berg > die Berge
- added -er or -er plus umlaut: das Land > die Länder
- added -en or -s(foreign words) die Blume > dieBlumen
der Park > die Parks
