Services

The Interactive Language Resource Center (ILRC) at Miami University is a restricted reference laboratory open to students, faculty, and staff of the following departments: French and Italian; German, Russian, Japanese, Chinese, Hebrew, and Arabic; Spanish and Portuguese; and Classics.

The ILRC’s mission is to serve the four language departments in actively implementing computer assisted language-learning technology into foreign language education, to act as a central repository of foreign language related materials and multimedia resources, and to promote technological advances related to foreign language education though workshops, individualized assistance, conferences, and regular announcements.

What can the ILRC do for me?

Audio Cassette Tape and CD Duplication

The ILRC will duplicate cassette tapes and CDs that accompany your course materials. If using the materials outside of the ILRC, please supply blank media with your request. When requesting audio tape duplications, be sure to complete a faculty request form which is available at the front desk. Please allow one working day for us to duplicate tapes. Please allow us at least one full working day to process your request. When requesting a video tape duplication, be sure to complete a service request form which is available at the front desk.

Video Tape Duplication

The ILRC will duplicate video tapes that accompany your course materials. If the materials will be housed in the ILRC, we will supply the video tapes. If the materials will be housed outside the ILRC, you will need to bring your own tapes (high quality video tape, preferably T-120) or have your department provide them for you. Please allow us at least one full working day to process your request. When requesting a video tape duplication, be sure to complete a service request form which is available at the front desk.

Video Standard Conversion

The ILRC will convert video tapes that accompany your course materials or projects from any world standard (PAL, SECAM, or NTSC) to any other world standard. If the materials will be housed in the ILRC, we will supply the video tapes. If the materials will be housed outside the ILRC, you will need to bring your own tapes (high quality video tape, preferrably T-120) or have your department provide them for you. Allow us at least one full working day to process your request. When requesting a video tape conversion, be sure to complete a faculty request form which is available at the front desk.

Television and Satellite Broadcast/Conference Recording

The ILRC will tape video broadcasts off the MUNet Cable System for use in your class or for use in the ILRC. If the materials will be housed in the ILRC, we will supply the video tapes. If the materials will be housed outside the ILRC, you will need to bring your own tapes (high quality video tape, preferably T-120) or have your department provide them for you. Please contact the ILRC at (513) 529-2510 to schedule taping. Please have as much information as possible when scheduling a recording (MUNet channel, time, day, satellite coordinates and bandwidth, satellite name, etc.

Web-Conferencing

Web cameras for internet videoconferencing via Microsoft NetMeeting or iChat are available at the front desk of the ILRC. If you would like to schedule a conference with a fellow student or colleague anywhere in the world, you may reserve these computers at specific days and times for your video conference. We suggest that you obtain your colleague's IP address or that you access "meetingpoint.muohio.edu" and select Channel "0" (zero) for general conferencing.

Audio Recording and Video Editing

If you need to make an audio recording for a class, you may use a Fostex tape recorder and microphone. The ILRC assistant or the Director can help you use the equipment and help guides are readily available. The ILRC also has video editing equipment that you may use to edit or compile several videos into a professional looking finished piece. Ask the assistant on duty or the Director for help.

Reserve Shelf Items

If you wish to put audio tapes, videos, DVD, CD-ROMs, etc. on reserve for your classes to use, please complete a faculty request form which is available at the front desk. Let us know the dates you wish to have the items on reserve and then off reserve, and we will take care of the rest!

Computer Classroom Scheduling

Instructors may reserve the ILRC’s small and large classrooms. The small classroom has 16 student stations plus an instructor station. The large classroom has 28 student stations plus an instructor station. Both classrooms have connection to internet, data projector, DVD player, VCR player, MUNet Cable Access, and full sound system. Please make your reservations as soon as possible, as the ILRC fills up fast with requests. Weekly lab reservation sheets for both classrooms are posted on Monday mornings in the ILRC.

Introduction to Technology and Related Workshops

You may schedule an ILRC orientation session for yourself or your classes. The ILRC Director will conduct a hands-on session with your class in many topics. Just ask and the Director will develop something for you!

Creating Materials for Montgomery & the ILRC-Online

If you have audio, video, visual, web, or interactive materials that you would like to be housed on the Montgomery File Server Project or the ILRC-Online, please contact the Director for assistance. We will be glad to digitize any materials you have and place them on the server for 24 hour-a-day, 7 day-a-week access. The Montgomery File Server Project houses several faculty and student initiatives. The ILRC-Online is the main repository for language learning materials. All audio materials are available as MP3 files, selected videos and movies are available for download as QuickTime movies or as streaming movies, and visual materials are usually presented as JPEG or GIF images. In addition, any web pages that you create for your classes may be housed on the Montgomery File Server Project, Materials are easily referenced through Miami's Blackboard system.

Large Format Printing, & Color Laser Printing

The ILRC has a wide-format printer that can do posters up to 24x36 or Size Super A1. Costs are currently running at $2.00 per foot. We also have a color laser printer in the ILRC that can print color up to 11x17 inches (tabloid size). Costs for the color laser printer are 25¢ for letter size, 50¢ for tabloid size.
