If your computer does not have NJStar Communicator, a 30 day demo is available at http://www.njstar.com. Download the program, install it, restart your computer, and then follow the instructions below.
From the Start menu, point to "Programs" then "NJStar Communicator", then select the "NJStar Communicator" program.

Once NJStar is loaded, you will see two main bars, the menu select bar (in the upper right hand corner of your screen) ...

...and the character input bar (directly above the start menu bar on the bottom of your screen).

Before typing in Chinese, you need to set settings: Click the "NJStar" character icon and the following menu will appear.

Set the input method environment (IME) to "Chinese". Select either "Simplified Chinese" or "Traditional Chinese". For the purposes of this tutorial, we are selecting "Simplified Chinese". Click the flag-like to the right of the NJStar character to revel the input methods. It is recommended that you use "Chinese Auto" or "Chinese GB" for most purposes.

Click on the icon that looks like a little keyboard to choose your overall input method. This should be automatically checked for Chinese based on the selections of the previous menus, but if it is not, go ahead and select "Chinese Input". Now you should be ready to start typing Chinese.

Now we turn our attention to the character input bar, located directly above the start menu bar on the bottom of your screen.Click "NJStar" character at the far left end of the bar and the following menu appears. This allows you to choose which input method you want to type in Chinese. The preferred method is "Standard Pinyin".

If you need to combine English words with Chinese words while you type, select the "Chinese OFF/ON" option. When you are finished with your English words, select this option again to continue in Chinese. Using this menu, you can also invoke a Phrase Manager, Glossary, and a Symbols Input dialog box to assist in your typing. To fully get a feel for the character input bar, open up a word processing program. In the examples below, we used WordPad.

Now that the settings are set for Chinese character input, let's find the character(s) for the phoneme SHU. As one typs [S], [H] and [U], nothing appears in the WordPad window. Why? Look at the character input bar. The Phoneme Shu is followed by several character possibilities. To correct, select the desired character and it will appear in the WordPad document. If the character you seek is not immediately listed, check to see if a black right or left arrow is highlighted. If it is, click on the arrow for more possibilities.

In the same manner, when one types the phoneme ka, [K] and [A], the phoneme ka appears in the character input bar with various character possibilities. Click on the appropriate character or press the number on keyboard that represents your desired charcter again. In this example, there are only six characters to choose from. The black arrows do not appear, so we know that there are no more choices possible for this particular phoneme. When you are finished typing your characters, you may print or save your document as you would any other doumcnet. All characters are retained in the document.
