Typing in foreign languages that use non-Roman character sets present special challenges to computer users. For Russian students, the easiest way to enter characters is to utilize the Russian Language Kit that come's with Apple's System Software. The software is not automatically installed with your computer, but you can easily enable it using the International pane in System Preferences. You may have to install the Russian Language Kit in Mac OS 9 first and then enable it in OS X, however, later versions of Mac OS X will incorporate the Russian Language Kit automatically.
To begin using the Russian Language Kit on the Macintosh, open up a unicode-compliant application such as TextEdit or Nisus Writer Express. Microsoft Word may also work. Once your document is open and you are ready to type, go to the menus at the top of the screen and look for either a flag or a country symbol. Click and hold on this symbol and the following menu should appear. Click on the appropriate Language Kit icon you wish to use.

Click into your document and begin typing in your target language. Any unicode-compliant font will contain Cyrillic characters. Suggested fonts to use when typing Russian include Lucida Grande, Didot, or any default font installed in the Macintosh operating System.
To assist you in learning the Cyrillic keyboard, use the following graphic from the Key Caps application:
