Character Entry for the Windows

Windows has the ability to process and display non-Roman foreign language characters. To set Windows to display languages you are learning, follow these steps. The graphics and setup procedure described below follow Windows XP's installation procedure, though other versions of Windows will have similiar setup procedures.

1) Click the Start Menu, Control Panels, and select the Regional and Language Options control panel.

2) Click the Languages tab in the Regional and Language Options control panel. If you are installing East Asian Languages, click the check box for that option. You will be prompted to install files into the Windows Operating System, and you will be asked for your Windows Installation disk and Office Installation Disc, if you have Microsoft Office installed on your computer.

Click on the Details button to continue your language setup.

3) After clicking the Details button, the Text Services and Input Languages dialog box appears. You will see what languages are already installed into your computer. Click the Add button to add a language to Windows.

4) Select the language you will be using. If you are choosing Arabic, the recommended installation is Saudi Arabian. If you are choosing Russian, the recommended installation is Russian Typewriter. If you are choosing Chinese, the recommended installation is Chinese PRC.

5) Once you have selected your language, you will have the opportunity to select your keyboard layout. It is highly recommended to keep the default settings that appear when you choose your language.

6) You may add additional languages as needed by repeating the process described above. When you are finished, select the Apply Button and the OK button in the control panel dialog, and close out the windows.

Your languages will now appear in the task bar in the bottom of your computer screen:
