Japanese Character Entry for Windows


Typing in foreign languages that use non-Roman character sets present special challenges to computer users. For Japanese students, the easiest way to enter characters is to utilize the Japanese Keyboard that comes with Windows.

Launch your Word Processing application, such as Microsoft Word, Notepad, or other application in which you wish to use Japanese.

In the lower right-hand corner of the task bar, select the Language block and choose Japanese.

When the Japanese keyboard is launched, several items appear in the taskbar alongside the language block:

It is recommended that you keep the input style to the default setting. For your input method, select the "A" block in the taskbar and choose which method you would like to type in.

Click into your document. Any standard Windows font should have Japanese characters built into it. As you type, a block will appear with your English phonetic entries.

After typing in a phonetic entry, you can hit the space bar to get additional options. Scroll the mouse up and down to find the proper character you are searching for.

When your character is found, press the Return key to continue to the next phonetic entry.
