GOETHE INSTITUTE INTERNATIONAL PROFICIENCY CERTIFICATIONS
These tests certify proficiency in German language at particular levels recommended for employment or study in German. There are two levels, as detailed below:
Level I: ZERTIFIKAT DEUTSCH
The "Zertifikat Deutsch als Fremdsprache" is accepted by German universities and employers as proof of well developed communicative skills in basic German. It certifies German language ability adequate to deal with communicative situations during a stay in a German-speaking country, such as participation in conversations at a normal rate of speech and writing and reading ability sufficient for everyday situations.
Students who have studied German for at least two years on the college level should be able to pass the exam. High school students generally qualify only in exceptional cases, for example, fourth year students enrolled in German AP Programs.
The test is administered at various Iocations and various dates in Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio.
Sample tests are available below. We recommend that you practice with these to become familiar with the structure and procedures of the test and to determine whether your knowledge of German is likely to be sufficient.
Level II: ZENTRALE MITTELSTUFENPRÜFUNG
The ZMP WAS developed by the Goethe-lnstitut Munich as a proficiency examination for students who have completed Mittelstufe III at the Goethe-lnstitutes in Germany. At the end of Mittelstufe III the student has gone through five 8-week intensive language courses or a total of about 1000 hours of instruction. American students who have completed four years of intensive German language studies on the college or university level and also have studied at a German university for at least 6 months should be able to pass the exam.
The ZMP tests academic language proficiency; knowledge of literature or history is not required.
